Overview

The Yaqui Language Teacher requires a broad level of knowledge of the Yaqui Language and Culture. The incumbent develops and implements a language curriculum for a comprehensive program to include K-12 students. This position will require designing and producing instructional materials for a variety of grade levels, as well as conducting Yaqui Language classes.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver classroom lesson plans, instructional materials, and instructional activities that facilitate interactive learning resulting in language acquisition in accordance with established departmental procedures.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum for teaching the Yaqui language to Tempe Union High School District students, as well as other approved audiences.
  • Collaborate with other language instructors to create Yaqui language learning standards, units, and assessments to guide the instruction of the Yaqui Language.
  • Collaborate with other instructors to develop Yaqui language and cultural resource materials for use in the classrooms and in other educational presentations.
  • Incorporate various culturally relevant instructional methods to teach the Yaqui language in grades K-12.
  • Assist in the development of pre- and post-language assessments; analyze data to help guide classroom instruction.
  • Record and synthesize student progress in the acquisition of the Yaqui language.
  • Attend all language instruction sessions that are prescribed by the Department.
  • Participate in scheduled professional development with other language instructors.
  • Maintain the organization of curricular materials, handouts, classroom schedules, and equipment care etc.
  • Assist in the establishment and/or delivery of college level coursework in the Yaqui language.
  • Provide instruction to college-level students enrolled in Yaqui teacher preparation coursework.
  • Record student progress, prepare monthly and yearly reports.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
  • Knowledge of
    • Writing and speaking the Yaqui language;
    • Phonology and phonetics of the Yaqui language;
    • Instructional methods and practices;
    • Standard practices in curriculum development to address the educational and understanding level for K-12;
    • Recordkeeping principles;
    • English and Yaqui language, grammar, and punctuation;
    • Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations;
    • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
    Skills and Abilities
    • Prepare and present the Yaqui language curriculum in a variety of formats;
    • Apply fundamental principles of Teacher Education, including instructional methods and practices;
    • Maintain files and records;
    • Provide excellent customer service;
    • Coordinate outreach efforts in assigned Yaqui communities;
    • Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
    • Interact and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, and outside public agencies;
    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
    • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have the ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, American Indian Studies or a closely related field, and three (3) years of speaking the Yaqui language fluently.

    • Possession of a Teaching Certificate or be able to obtain the certificate within 3 months of hire;
    • Preferably experience in classroom teaching
    Special Requirements
    • Requires the ability to read and write the Yaqui Language at a level that would allow the incumbent to perform the duties listed;
    • Must be able to pass an oral interview to establish language fluency;
    • Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License;
    • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
    • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
