Overview
Monument Valley High School - Upward Bound serves first generation, low-income, high school students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college students. Advisor will assist in selecting participants in the development of educational goals, directing them to resources in making career and academic major choices, financial aid, college admission, etc. Provide opportunities to develop social skills, college, and cultural experiences;
monitor academic and tutoring requirements. This position will be required to be at Monument Valley High School on a weekly basis.
- Identify eligible participants who desire to go to college, orient new participants, and monitor weekly check-ins to determine monthly stipend eligibility.
- Develop files on each participant for use in educational and career planning.
- Provide information for admission to postsecondary institutions, financial aid, and scholarships, etc., and provide required weekly workshops.
- Provide participants tutoring/mentoring services.
- Consult with parents via school orientations and/or home visits.
- Implement services as per Plan of Operation and submit monthly reports.
- Assist in strategies for orienting faculty, staff, and organizations about Upward Bound.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree required, or 2-years’ experience of a combination of higher education and experience working with potential first-generation students.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
- Knowledge of student assessment instruments and learning styles.
- Demonstrated ability to relate well to participants, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in education, counseling, or related field experience.
- Experience working in TRIO projects or similar programs preferred.

Physical DemandsThe employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
