Position Purpose
The Equipment Operator I is a safety-sensitive position subject to DOT drug & alcohol procedures, must be available to report to work during regular business hours and after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. This entry level CDL required position focuses on operating Outagamie County’s fleet of dump trucks, as well as several medium and light pieces of equipment.
The role involves moving materials from manufacturing and distribution centers to jobsites, supporting winter plowing activities, and maintaining a safe and efficient road system.
Note: This is a non-benefit eligible position.
Key Responsibilities Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes.Plows snow from highways, applying chlorides and abrasives as necessary.Operate a dump truck to transport materials to construction sites (e.g., hot mix asphalt, stone, dirt, concrete, debris).Complete pre- and post-trip inspections to identify mechanical issues.Maintain equipment through inspections, greasing and lubing, servicing, minor repairs, and proper operation.Ensure materials are loaded correctly to avoid exceeding vehicle weight limits.Understand WIS DOT work zone field manual to correctly set up traffic control layouts.Perform maintenance duties on the County highway system and related jurisdictions (pot hole patching, crack filling, sweeping, mowing, brush cutting, guardrail repair, bridge maintenance, etc.).Remove hazards and debris from roadways.Erect and remove snow fence, repair fences and barriers on right of way, landscape roadsides, install erosion control.Knowledge and ability to set up levels, lasers and utility locators.Operate small tools (chainsaws, string trimmers, brush cutters, power saws, jack hammers, impacts, painters, drills, etc.).Operate hand tools (shovels, rakes, hammers, wrenches, etc.).Operate vehicles such as trucks, dump trucks, plows, brooms, forklifts, loaders, compactors; operate tar kettles and other small equipment as assigned.Maintain grounds adjacent to highway facilities, including planting and mowing, laying sod, and landscape material installation.Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work overtime/extra hours as required, including nights and weekends.Complete and submit records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project daily.Expected to work in a variety of weather conditions and conduct duties in a safe, diligent manner at all times.Ability to communicate relevant information to team members in a respectful and constructive way.Maintain a clean and safe worksite.Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements
Graduate from high school or G.E.D. andExperience in the operation of light duty equipment desiredValid Commercial Driver's License Class B, C, D with endorsement N (Tanker) is required, and the ability to legally operate CMV's with Air Brakes, Manual Transmissions, and Tank Cargo (no restrictions such as L, Z, E, O or X).2 or more years in the construction industry and in the operation of light duty equipment desired.Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.Required Or Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of and ability to operate and service trucks, tractors, and light equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
- Ability to apply basic computer skills to enter time, record materials, check emails, etc.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
- Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records, and prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
- Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
- Ability to work semi-independently, making sound decisions using good judgment.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials, and the general public.
- Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
- Ability to organize and schedule work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
- Physical ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and move objects up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, with proper body mechanics.
- Essential Physical Demands include standing/walking, driving/operating equipment, lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, reaching, and verbal communication.
- Visual requirements for operator moving machinery/vehicles; ability to respond to emergencies and highway conditions.
