Reports to: Director of Campus Services/Assistant Director of Campus Safety

Location: Appleton Campus

Position Type: Full-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)

Hours of Work: 9:30pm – 7:30am, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Primary Objective

Responsible for protecting Lawrence University students, staff, visitors, property, and buildings from fire, theft, vandalism, and other hazardous conditions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform walking and motorized patrol of university property, providing service and assistance when requested.
  • Ensure safety of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Check and lock/unlock doors on campus at predesignated times.
  • Manage student access to buildings after hours.
  • Address safety/security related matters including lock problems, burned out lights, storm damage, maintenance problems, etc.
  • Prevent vandalism on campus.
  • Respond to breaking and entering incidents on university property.
  • Relay emergency calls to the proper person and/or agencies.
  • Enforce parking violations.
  • Address complaints (noise, suspicious activities/persons, theft/loss, etc.).
  • Escort students, faculty, and staff via walking or vehicle.
  • Enter work orders into database.
  • Conduct monthly fire system testing.
  • Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Handle minor maintenance tasks.

Working Relationships

Daily direction will be provided by the Security Night Shift Supervisor and/or Director of Security. Interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Work in conjunction with the RHD on Duty, Assistant Dean of Students, and the Dean of Students when applicable. Interact with the Facility Services staff to help resolve mechanical problems on campus. Interact with the Safety Coordinator to assist with monthly fire system testing and monthly fire extinguisher inspections.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Willingness to work weekends, all types of weather, and holidays.
  • Ability to walk up to 9 hours of a 10‑hour shift.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs up to 3 hours of a 10‑hour shift.
  • Ability to move quickly across campus by either walking quickly or running.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software including Word and Excel.
  • Sensitivity for confidentiality of materials/information processed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Investigative skills.
  • Crisis management skills or working knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Report Exec incident reporting software or similar applications.
  • Working knowledge of door access software.
  • Good judgment with the ability to make sound decisions.
  • CPR/First Aid/Defibrillator certification or ability to become certified within one year of employment.
  • Previous experience in loss prevention, criminal justice, or security.
Employment Requirements
  • Successful completion of criminal and MVR background check; meet University Authorized Driver Policy requirements; pre‑employment physical; and favorable completion of reference checks.
  • Valid driver’s license and completion of campus safe driving training before driving any campus vehicles.
  • Wear a university supplied uniform.
  • Available to work overtime when needed (i.e., providing security for special programs, athletic events, and in case of disaster).
  • Willingness to attend organizational meetings as required.
