Purpose and Scope

The professional registered nurse in Inpatient Services RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of clinically competent care including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. This may include delegation of appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs and Patient Care Technicians.

As a member of the kidney disease health care team, this position participates in decision‑making, teaching, leadership functions, and quality improvement activities that enhance patient care outcomes and program operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs essential functions under the direction of the Supervisor and with guidance from the Educator, Preceptor or another Registered Nurse.
  • Collects, analyzes and documents patient data pre‑during‑post treatment, making adjustments to the treatment plan and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Provides education to patients and families, assessing learning needs and documenting progress.
  • Recognizes and reports non‑normal patient status; collaborates with the health team.
  • Directs and provides safe, effective care for assigned patients as prescribed for all modality‑specific treatment procedures.
  • Assesses daily patient care needs and collaborates with ancillary staff as needed.
  • Communicates with FKC and non‑FKC dialysis providers, as well as contracted facility personnel, to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Administers intradialytic transfusions, monitors response, and notifies physician of adverse reactions.
  • Administers medications as prescribed, documenting justification and effectiveness.
  • Initiates emergency response measures as required.
  • Serves as a resource for the health care team, participates in staff training and orientation of new staff.
  • Provides specialized nursing care instruction to hospital/facility staff as contractually required.
  • Assists in an outpatient facility on an as‑needed basis.
  • Completes CAP requirements to advance within the program.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Provides direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and the ability to bend over.
  • May need to move machines and equipment up to 200 lbs. and lift solutions up to 30 lbs. to 5 feet.
  • Work environment is a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise.
  • Possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
  • May perform essential functions at other locations with similar demands.
  • Work includes desk work, computer usage, patient interaction, and interaction with staff and physicians.
  • Requires travel to training or meeting sites between assigned facilities.
  • Participation in on‑call rotation, night, weekend, holiday or as defined by program needs.
Supervision
  • Oversees Patient Care Technicians/LVN/LPNs/RNs as a designated Nurse in Charge, upon meeting all criteria.
  • Criteria include successful completion of FKC education and modality‑specific training, minimum nine months of RN experience, and six months of acute dialysis experience.
Education and Licensure
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current appropriate state licensure.
  • Current or successfully completed CPR BLS Certification.
  • Must meet practice requirements in all states where employed.
Experience and Required Skills
  • Entry level for RNs with less than one year of nephrology nursing experience over the last two years.
  • Minimum nine months of Registered Nurse experience (twelve months preferred).
  • Six months of acute dialysis experience (preferred).
  • Hemodialysis and/or ICU experience (preferred).
