Telecommunicator

Overview

An employee in this position works an assigned shift and receives incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatches and maintains contact with police units, dispatches calls for fire, and mutual aid as required. Work includes operating dispatch equipment, computer terminal connected to the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) and the National Crime Information Center, and using State of NC databases for items such as warrants and missing persons.

Work also involves the performance of detailed record keeping, monitoring public and private alarms, entering data and filing of police incidents and filing of related documents, and updating status and locations of public safety personnel.

• Receive incoming emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch police units, fire units, and mutual aid as required.
• Maintain contact with police units during incidents.
• Operate dispatch equipment and computer terminals connected to the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
• Use State of NC databases for items such as warrants and missing persons.
• Perform detailed record keeping; monitor public and private alarms; enter data and file police incidents and related documents; update status and locations of public safety personnel.
• Report to the Communications Shift Supervisor and perform routine supervision as required.

This position reports to the Communications Shift Supervisor. Requires regular supervision on routine work. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
