Trainee Nurse endoscopist is a developmental post, the post holder will be working towards becoming a qualified Nurse Endoscopist after successful completion of all relevant training. (Post graduate Diploma / degree in gastroenterology, registered with JETS and achieved Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation for Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy and completed Independent Non-medical Prescribing course V300). The trainee will fulfil the role under the supervision of a named endoscopist who is trained and qualified as trainer.
The supervisor may be a nurse endoscopist or a consultant endoscopist. The supervision will be clearly linked to the competencies that require completion within a prearranged and designated time frame. The focus will be on developing autonomous practice.
The qualified Nurse endoscopist will use their expert knowledge and complex decision making skills during dedicated training session. Qualified endoscopist is accountable for the total episode of care for patients
The Trainee Nurse endoscopist must be able to demonstrate competence across all key areas from JAG competencies framework. In addition, the trainee must demonstrate the ability to work at an advanced level and be able to apply the competencies in the key areas of their scope of practice.
Demonstrated proficiency will advance this role from a Band 7 Trainee Nurse endoscopist to a Band 8A Nurse endoscopist as a fully JAG certified endoscopist.
NOTE:
(The successful applicant will only move to Band 8a on successful completion of post graduate Diploma/degree in gastroenterology, registered with JETS and achieved accreditation for Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy and Completed Independent Non-medical Prescribing course V300 within 2 years of appointment, unless evidence of extenuating circumstances is submitted).
- Undertake clinical assessment of patients requiring lower GI or upper GI endoscopy.
- Identify abnormalities and act according to protocols and guidelines.
- Accurately record examination findings, including appropriate endoscopic images.
- Provide education, life style advice and support to patients and relatives.
- Registered Nurse on Part 1 (Adult) of the live NMC register.
- 3 years post registration experience of which 2 years must be in endoscopy.
- NICaN Advanced Communications Skills
