JOB TITLE: Teacher - Special
REPORTS TO: Principal
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER- Exercise of general professional duties as obligated by the Teacher Regulations.
- Exercise of particular duties as directed by the principal or board.
1. Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
- Promote the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to him/her.
- Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions, making relevant records and reports.
- Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils except where compromising the teacher’s own position.
- Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
- Communicate and cooperate with vetted persons or bodies outside the school approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
- Participate in meetings arranged for the above purposes.
- Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils, except where compromising the teacher’s own position.
- Participate, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
- Review teaching methods and programmes of work from time to time.
- Partake in arrangements for further training and professional development.
- Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
- Maintain good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguard their health and safety both on school premises and during authorised school activities elsewhere.
- Participate in meetings at the school related to the curriculum, the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.
- Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; record and report such assessments; supervise pupils at examinations.
- Contribute to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
- Co‑ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
- Take part in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
- Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to these duties, including managing support staff and ordering equipment and materials.
- Attend assemblies subject to Article 22 of the Order.
- Register the attendance of pupils and supervise pupils before, during or after school sessions.
- A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, of which not more than 190 days should involve classroom teaching.
- A teacher shall be available to perform duties at times and places as directed by the Principal, for 1,265 hours in any year, exclusive of preparation, marking, and travel time.
- A teacher may not be required to teach as distinct from supervising children in a classroom scenario for more than 25 hours in any week in a primary or special school and 23.5 hours in any week in a secondary school.
- Mid‑day supervision is not required unless a separate contract exists.
- A break of at least 30 minutes is required between 12:00 and 14:00; 12:00 and 14:30 for nursery schools and nursery units in primary schools.
