Position DescriptionThe Anoka County Transportation division’s vision is to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The highway department has an immediate opening for a Seasonal Engineering Assistant Design Intern, who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include assisting Project Inspectors and Construction Surveyors on construction projects and preliminary surveys. This is a seasonal, non‑exempt, on‑site position.

- Salary: $22.00 to $24.00 per hour.
- Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 26: $21.72 to $29.31 per hour.

This position will work at the Anoka County Transportation Facility, located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.
Work HoursExpected work hours are Monday to Friday, work hours will vary.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Design Intern.
- Assist project managers and project engineers with project development activities.
- Assist in the preparation of project documents, technical memos and reports.
- Assist Design Engineering with CAD design and spreadsheet design tasks.
- Assist in the preparation and review of construction plans.
- Complete preliminary scoping activities.
- Perform various other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Must be at least 17 years of age at time of hire.
- Must be currently enrolled in a civil technology, construction management, or civil engineering degree program or related field.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Successfully pass criminal history and driver’s license background check.
- Attention to detail.
- Read and interpret construction plans.
- Read and interpret maps and pinpoint specific locations on the Anoka County Highway system.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with CADD programs.
- Standard office environment, various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, including unfinished structures, construction sites, rough terrain, and changing weather conditions depending on assignment.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
- Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
- Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.
- Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short‑ and long‑term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills.
- Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
- Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment.
- Regular lifting of 0-25 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds.
- Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to various inspection and surveying equipment depending on assignment.
- Inspection and surveying equipment may include but is not limited to digital camera, tape measure, hammer, chisels, boom truck and other machinery, electronic drafting equipment, material testing equipment, power and hand tools, and personal protective equipment.
- Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
