Job Description
  • Ensure personal safety and the safety of fellow team members.
  • Assist supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Wear appropriate PPE which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection.
  • Use proper lifting and ergonomic techniques.
  • Read work orders or receive oral instructions to determine work assignments, material or equipment needs.
  • Follow detailed job‑specific instructions to produce castings efficiently and to meet customer specifications.
  • Conduct daily inspection of equipment.
  • Demonstrate ability to charge the furnace, take readings and monitor furnace condition and record.
  • Operate yard crane to accurately weigh charge metals into the weigh hopper.
  • Conduct quality testing of the iron to determine proper chemistry.
  • Plot and adjust chemistry of iron; test iron temperature of every charge and record.
  • Haul iron, slags off molten iron, rods and dump the furnace.
  • Relin the furnace, overhaul, patch, rebuild ladles, covers, and spouts on furnaces.
  • Prep for the next production run.
  • Restock alloys when they become low.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the production area and metal storage yard.

Education And/Or Experience

High school diploma/GED preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; and effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear; reach with hands and arms; walk, sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Regularly exposed to a wide range of temperatures, humid conditions, moving machinery, dust, fumes, gases, odors, vibrations and varying noise levels.
