A Safe Harbor Marina Apprentice is committed to learning the different disciplines needed to work in a marina. The apprentice will be exposed to yard operations, sailboat rigging, painting (preparation & application), composite repairs, marine systems and mechanical work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Rotate through various departments and learn to assist with performing various skills in the marina.
- Prep surfaces: stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming.
- Assist in applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boats.
- Unstep and step masts, assemble and disassemble spars, tune standing rigging.
- Connect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring, install booms, sails and running rigging.
- Prepare sailboats to safely sail.
- Haul, block and launch boats.
- Assisting with general boat maintenance and service work (e.g., waxing, bottom painting, zinc replacement).
- Work closely with the Yard Foreman and assist fellow crew members as needed.
- Inspect, maintain and repair boats of all kinds.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment.
- Assist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear and accessories.
- Diagnose, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components.
- Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job, including budgeted time and timeframe for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, and sourcing parts if required.
- Acquire knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems.
- Repair and install vessel systems and components (electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems—fresh, salt and waste, gas and diesel engines).
- Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets.
- Available to work overtime when required.
- Other duties as assigned by Manager.
- Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
- Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
- Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Physical Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Technical school training preferred.
- Ability to ascend and descend a ladder.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Basic boat handling skills preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
