Reports to: Maintenance Manager, Shift Supervisor or their designee
Salary Range: $26.50 per hour - $30.00 per hour (DOQ) (PM shift differential offered)
ABOUT US
The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) manages and operates public transportation in Anne Arundel County, Howard County, northern Prince George’s County, and the City of Laurel. The RTA employs 150 administrative and operational staff out of our Annapolis-Junction location.
JOB DESCRIPTION
RTA is actively seeking an Automotive/Bus Maintenance Technician for our fleet of transit, medium-duty buses and light-duty service vehicles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Demonstrates behaviors that are consistent with standards for professional and ethical conduct
- Inspects, diagnoses, services and/or repairs transit vehicles and related mechanical equipment
- Troubleshoot, remove, clean, repair, reinstall and adjust vehicle components:
- Engine, fuel and emission components
- Driveline components including transmissions and drive axles
- Electrical/ electronic components
- Brakes/ suspension/ steering/ exhaust
- Cab/ chassis
- Air systems
- Ensure work orders are detailed and properly completed. Must be able to use the Company’s computerized maintenance management system.
- Select the most appropriate course of action for efficient, effective repairs using mechanical knowledge, diagnostic tools and equipment, gauges, micrometers and measuring devices and computerized diagnostic software (laptops).
- Evaluate completed work prior to release to ensure accuracy and sufficient detail
- Ensure safe use of power and hand-held tools
- Perform road calls and emergency services as needed
- Move vehicles safely between the lot, shop and work areas
- Communicate professionally with customers, team members and supervisors
- Actively participate in safety or educational training as required
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience monitoring and meeting preventive maintenance (PM) schedules and operating automotive repair shop equipment.
- Ability to work independently performing over the road and shop repairs
- Ability to learn new technologies
- Demonstrated ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment, manufacturer and aftermarket diagnostic software, gauges, measuring devices, and manuals and wiring schematics
- Strong communication skills, bringing demonstrated abilities of building solid relationships with superiors, peers and subordinates
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of three (3) years of full-time hands-on light, medium, heavy duty and/or transit repair experience. Equivalent training and education/coursework in this field may be considered.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, heavy equipment, and alternative fuel.
- Knowledge of computer diagnostics and computer skills.
- Must earn one (1) ASE certification within their first six (6) months of employment, and must earn one (1) additional certification within their first year of employment.
- Ability to obtain Section 609 A/C Systems certification within one (1) year of hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a commercial driver's license class B with Passenger (P) endorsement and no Airbrakes (L) restriction within a specified time period.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a medical examiner's certificate (DOT card).
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Valid commercial driver's license class B or higher with Passenger (P) endorsement and no airbrakes (L) restriction.
- ASE certifications
- Section 609 A/C systems certification.
