General Manager – Annapolis, MD

Abacus Solutions Group is looking to hire a General Manager to oversee strategic and operational activities, ensuring growth, profitability, and exceptional client and employee experience.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Direction
  • Partner with the Company President to oversee all business operations and organizational performance.
  • Participate in development and implementation of company policies and long‑term strategic goals.
  • Develop, review, update, and execute the company’s strategic plan, including sales growth, financial performance, operational efficiency, and new product or service development.
  • Meet regularly with management to review progress, address challenges, and adjust goals based on current conditions.
Operational Oversight
  • Direct and coordinate activities across all departments, including operations, field/construction, design/sales, and administration.
  • Establish and maintain effective systems, processes, and standard procedures for employee roles and operations.
  • Review production, operating, and performance reports to ensure efficiency, cost control, quality, and timely project completion.
  • Identify and resolve operational issues to minimize delays, reduce costs, and support future growth.
  • Oversee key projects, workflows, performance metrics, and data analysis.
  • Oversee financial performance and budget execution across departments using CoConstruct and Quick Books.
  • Review and analyze project budgets, job costing, and coding to ensure expenses are accurately tracked and aligned with company standards.
  • Evaluate actual costs versus estimates on all projects, identifying variances and implementing corrective actions to protect margins.
  • Review analyses of costs, operations, forecasts, and performance to assess progress toward business objectives.
  • Review and approve accounting analyses related to budgeting, financial reporting, production efficiency, and capital expenditures.
  • Review monthly profit and loss statements, reporting on revenue, gross profit, and variances versus budget and forecast.
  • Monitor projects closely to expenses, ensure accurate estimating, and maintain profitability throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure proactive scheduling, timely and accurate billing, and collection of all projects draws in coordination with project managers and accounting.
Sales, Marketing & Business Development
  • Partner with the Company President to direct and administer sales and marketing strategies.
  • Review operations and sales plans to support growth, new markets, and operational capacity.
  • Collaborate with sales and design teams on concepts, new technologies, and product or service improvements that enhance cost efficiency, safety, customer satisfaction, and market growth.
  • Support accurate estimating practices, including obtaining competitive subcontractor pricing and using CoConstruct and Excel.
People Management & Employee Experience
  • Recruit, hire, and retain qualified staff to meet jobsite and operational demands, holding leaders accountable for staffing needs within their teams.
  • Set clear performance expectations for all direct reports and hold them accountable for results, behaviors, and adherence to company standards.
  • Actively manage, coach, and motivate employees to drive productivity, engagement, and consistent performance outcomes.
  • Measure, evaluate, and document employee performance and productivity, addressing performance gaps promptly through corrective action plans when needed.
  • Execute the Performance Management SOP consistently and without exception for all direct reports.
  • Ensure all direct reports receive timely annual performance reviews and ongoing feedback throughout the year.
  • Require and maintain documented development plans for all direct reports, aligned with current role expectations and future leadership needs.
  • Conduct structured monthly one‑on‑one meetings with direct reports to review performance, accountability metrics, priorities, and obstacles.
  • Maintain regular meetings with the President to review leadership performance, financial results (P&L, balance sheets, actual vs. estimated results), and operational pipeline.
  • Foster and enforce a safe, respectful, and positive working environment across all projects and worksites, addressing issues immediately and decisively.
Client Experience
  • Serve as a visible and approachable representative of the company.
  • Ensure clear, consistent, and proactive communication with clients throughout each project.
  • Address client concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Visit job sites during projects to monitor progress and ensure client satisfaction.
  • Participate in final project walk‑throughs with clients and supervising staff to ensure expectations are met or exceeded.
