NOTE: A $10,000 signing bonus will be awarded to successful candidates.
- $1,000 will be payable upon hire.
- $4,000 will be payable upon the successful completion of one (1) year of service as an Anne Arundel Deputy Sheriff.
- $5,000 will be payable upon the successful completion of two (2) years of service as an Anne Arundel County Deputy Sheriff.
This is a recruitment for Deputy Sheriff I, Lateral Entry. Applicants must be sworn Law Enforcement Officers who are currently or previously certified in the State of Maryland (MPCTC Certified). The position is full‑time, permanent and safety sensitive. It is within the Sheriff's Office. Candidates must be currently Certified Maryland Police Officers by the Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) and have at least one (1) year of law enforcement experience (must be separated in good standing from a full‑service law enforcement agency for two (2) years or less by the closing date of the posting).
This is responsible law enforcement regulatory work that includes but is not limited to serving arrest warrants, civil and criminal documents, maintaining courtroom decorum, safety and security, transporting and maintaining security and custody of prisoners, and extraditing individuals as required by court orders.
Employees in this class are expected to perform their assigned duties with minimum supervision after the probationary period. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level Deputy Sheriff II. Assignments follow state law and county policies. Applicants must meet MPCTC certification and firearms standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide order and security in the courthouse and courtrooms, including general search and surveillance, preserving order during court session, and maintaining security and custody of persons brought before the court.
- Transport prisoners to and from courts, correctional facilities, hospitals, or other institutions.
- Serve civil and criminal process papers including summons, subpoenas, civil and criminal citations/warrants, and writs.
- Levies and seizes property on judgments; arrange sale of seized property as ordered by the court.
- Serve arrest warrants and judgments; make arrests on criminal bench warrants and civil body attachments.
- Provide accurate, complete and concise testimony in court.
- Provide court‑ordered protection of persons for various public and private assignments.
- Safely operate a county radio‑equipped vehicle.
- Write clear and factual written reports; perform traffic control enforcement; issue warnings and citations for moving violations.
- Serve as a back‑up responder to assist Anne Arundel County Police units, a first responder to on‑view situations, or an assistant to other local, state or federal agencies as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office rules and policies.
- Proficiency operating a two‑way radio.
- Proficiency with standard handgun firearms and related defensive equipment.
- Safe operation of a motor vehicle.
- Effective communication skills; able to respond to hostile or combative persons.
- Ability to apply law enforcement principles and procedures.
- Graduation from high school.
- At least 2 years of general work experience.
- Minimum age of 21 at time of appointment.
- Valid non‑commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
- Must be currently or previously certified Maryland Police Officer by MPCTC.
- At least one (1) year of law enforcement experience (must be separated in good standing from a full‑service law enforcement agency for two (2) years or less by the closing date of the posting).
