Anne Arundel County Government is currently hiring for a full-time, permanent Senior Engineer position within the Engineering Division of the Office of Inspections and Permits. The Engineering Division is responsible for the review and approval of commercial and residential subdivisions, Preliminary Plans, Site Development Plans, grading permits, building permits, and major projects that support economic development.
The Senior Engineer position involves advanced or lead-level engineering work responsible for providing efficient, timely, and realistic solutions to complex engineering issues related to water and sewer, stormwater runoff, drainage, stormwater management, site infrastructure, and roads in a fast‑paced environment. The employee is expected to perform a variety of civil engineering tasks independently and with minimal supervision. The employee is expected to provide technical engineering assistance to professional, technical, and office support staff engaged in the review of development plans and permit applications.
Excellent customer service skills, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills, are needed for routine communication with citizens, local organizations, staff, and internal and external customers.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORKWork involves responsibility for performing increasingly more difficult engineering duties associated with managing staff in the review of projects related to development applications of commercial and residential subdivisions, Preliminary Plans, Site Development Plans, grading permits, building permits, infrastructure (water, sewer, roads, storm drainage, and stormwater management).
Work involves the application of thorough engineering knowledge to ensure assigned projects are in compliance with applicable building and construction industry standards, Federal, State, and County codes relative to the area of assignment.
Work requires considerable contact with county agencies, officials, engineering consultants, community representatives, developers, contractors, and representatives for regulatory agencies for the purpose of presenting, explaining, and implementing various work projects.
Provides information and recommended course of action on potential impacts to the supervisory chain promptly, such that direction for corrective action can be provided. Makes quality written or oral presentations of project status to higher management, as required.
Provides technical engineering assistance as required within the area of expertise to supervisors, other project managers, and other County agencies. Reviews and comments with timely response to requests for input. Serves on ad hoc technical review committees and provides well‑thought‑out recommendations.
The scope of work impacts the quality of life in the county through the ability to plan, design, and construct the public infrastructure, which affects the County's growth and expansion of the tax base.
Work is performed within established policies and professional standards and is reviewed through conferences and reports for adherence to schedules and standards applicable to the assignment by the higher‑level engineer or management official.
