Introduction
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for a volunteer/unpaid internship with the Maryland Park Service, at Assateague State Park. This opportunity will provide hands‑on experience in the environmental education and animal care field.

Main Purpose of JobThe main purpose of this position is to assist staff in leading curriculum and recreation‑based lessons for visiting school trips, summer camps, and park visitors. Primary roles will be teaching an assigned lesson plan for field trips and assisting with the care of the education animal ambassadors at the park.
The internship runs about 6 weeks between late April through mid‑July. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor. A longer internship is available if the correct candidate applies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSApplicant must be a high school graduate, with interest in education and/or the environmental field. Current college students studying any related field are preferred. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.

- Interest in animal welfare and caretaking
- Ability to be on your feet, in hot and sandy conditions, for long periods of time
- Ability to remain flexible with changing schedules
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record. Please note, a provisional driver’s license will not be accepted as the restrictions may interfere with the job requirements.
