Library Media Specialist

The Summit School is a not-for-profit full-day special education program approved by the State of Maryland for students with learning differences (specific learning disabilities) such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, developmental language disorders, executive functions disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and is accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS).

The school was established in September 1989 to promote literacy and success for bright children, in grades 1-8, ages 6-15, with the goal facilitating success in a mainstream high school environment and college. The instructional program offers an integrated yet targeted curriculum that emphasizes active teaching and learning, research-based methodologies, and sensitivity to students’ unique learning profiles. We meet students where they are academically and bring them up to where they need to be.

Our students receive individualized instruction in reading, written language, and math, and we provide mainstream, grade level instruction in science and social studies that incorporates differentiated instruction to meet each student’s individual cognitive-academic-linguistic profile. Our students matriculate to mainstream high schools and most attend and complete college. At the Summit School, instruction is not only rigorous, it is relevant. Students learn and apply concepts as they relate to real world issues.

Summit’s program is a well-rounded program, offering students classes in performing and visual arts, STEM, outdoor education, and physical education as well as competitive sports at the middle school level. The Summit School is located eight miles south of Annapolis, MD.

The Summit School, Edgewater, MD is seeking a part-time librarian. Our library program promotes strong information literacy skills for both digital and print materials. Research skills are explicitly taught and integrated with the classroom curriculum throughout the grades with the librarian being an integral part of the learning process. The Library Media Specialist works closely with teaching staff to integrate suitable and meaningful lessons in the classroom.

This role is far more than collection management; the Librarian is an integral part of the school, teaching research and information literacy skills while fostering a deep‑stated love of reading in students with dyslexia and other learning differences.

• Curriculum Integration & Instruction: Design and deliver engaging, multisensory activities that integrate information literacy (digital and print) with classroom curricula.
  Partner with teaching staff to co‑teach and provide resources that support classroom inquiries.
• Collection Development & Diversity: Curate and maintain a culturally responsive collection that is current, inclusive, and representative of all children and families.
  Prioritize "high-interest, low-level" texts and accessible formats (audio books, graphic novels) to support our unique student population.
• Literacy Advocacy & Engagement: Create a vibrant library culture through engaging activities, book clubs, and literacy‑themed events.
  Organize and host guest readers and visiting authors to inspire students.
  Manage and mentor library volunteers to ensure a welcoming and efficient environment.
• Professional Growth: Commit to ongoing professional development and stay current on emerging trends in educational technology and library science.

Maryland school library media specialist certified or eligibility for certification.
