Overview
This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-time, Regular, Represented, Safety Sensitive Automotive Mechanic I vacancy in the Department of Central Services, Fleet Division. This is mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
Responsibilities- Participate in the mechanical repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive equipment including passenger cars, trucks, tractors, and related standard and specialized equipment.
- Initially, work is closely supervised; as proficiency is gained, perform routine repair assignments independently. Assist higher‑level mechanics in complex repair work, or perform complex repairs under supervision.
- Perform work as outlined on repair orders with efficiency and accuracy.
- Inspect vehicle fluid levels and replenish as necessary.
- Tune engines, change tires, gap and replace spark plugs, set timing; make service calls.
- Participate in the overhaul and repair of transmissions, differentials, and front and rear assemblies.
- Inspect, adjust, and replace required units and related parts including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
- Repair and overhaul carburetors and clutch assemblies; make minor repairs to hydraulic systems.
- Road-test vehicles and report any safety issues to supervisor.
- Report machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor. Ensure that County vehicles and shop area are kept clean.
- Assist higher‑level mechanics in complex repairs and major overhaul work.
- Perform related work as required.
- Knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications and diagrams.
- Sufficient education to read and interpret automotive repair manuals; six (6) or more months in basic automotive repair and maintenance; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
- Positions in this class are required to lift tools and equipment weighing fifty pounds, and to climb onto and maneuver around equipment.
- Automotive Mechanic I is the entry performance proficiency level class of mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. Advancement to Automotive Mechanic II (journey level) and Automotive Mechanic III (full performance) is based on experience and satisfactory work performance, at the discretion of the appointing authority.
- Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
- This is a Safety-Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
- This position may involve night shift hours from 3:30 pm to Midnight. Preference will be given to those possessing diesel engine experience.
- Preference will be given to participants in any internship programs offered by the County.
