Position:
Head Swim Team Coach – Barracudas Swim Team. Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Head Swim Team Coach will develop, organize and implement high quality programs that fulfill the mission of the YMCA. The Head Coach will oversee all aspects of the competitive swim program, with direct coaching responsibilities, foster positive relationships, mentor as appropriate, and communicate effectively with YMCA staff, coaches, swimmers, parents, and partner organizations.
Summary
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Head Swim Team Coach will develop, organize and implement high quality programs that fulfill the mission of the YMCA. The Head Coach – Barracudas Swim Team will oversee all aspects of our competitive swim program, with direct coaching responsibilities. It is expected that the Head Coach will foster positive relationships, mentor as appropriate, and communicate well with their YMCA staff, coaches, swim team members, swim team parents, and other partner organizations.
EssentialFunctions
- Serve as the Head Coach for the team’s competitive program, providing leadership and guidance to the team’s coaches, volunteers, and swimmers.
- Manage day-to-day operating issues of the Barracudas Swim Team.
- Develop the team’s training group structure and team policies.
- Recruiting of novice swimmers and swimmer retention
- Plan team practice schedule and meet schedule, including team and coaches travel, meet entries, and other meet administrative duties
- Plan and lead all-member parent meetings
- Manage and delegate administrative duties
- Follow all Ann Arbor YMCA Code of Conduct Rules and any Policies and Procedures established by the YMCA.
- Assist Aquatics Director with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all paid and volunteer coaches and/or administrators as programs dictate and budget guidelines allow using best practices.
- Ensure quality and technical consistency throughout programming and across coaches.
- Organize year round meet calendar. Write and submit all line ups for all meets. Attend, manage, and run all meets as needed.
- Engage with core aquatics programming to ensure a bridge between pre-competitive and competitive swimming.
- Assist in preparation of an annual operating budget with the Aquatics Director.
- Actively represent and promote the YMCA in the local community.
- Act as a role model for swimmers
- Strategic Planning for the Swim Team in conjunction with the Aquatics Director.
- Required to travel periodically to “away” meets.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in the evenings with some irregular scheduling. Evening and weekend hours required.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the pool deck) for long periods of time.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
- Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
- Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
- Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and activities.
- Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate swim team activities and programs.
- A minimum of one to three years of YMCA experience or experience in a directly related field is preferred.
- Must successfully pass background check and complete YMCA Child Abuse Safety training prior to employment.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and ability to successfully complete MVR if driving PUV (personal use vehicle).
- Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, fiscal management, and life spans of programs is critical.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, supervisory skills, budgeting skills and initiative in program development. Ability to manage multiple priorities are critical.
