Overview
The Security Police Officer’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safe and secure environment for all patients, staff, and visitors to the SJMHS-West Market.

Role DescriptionAn employee within this classification performs general security police duties in the Security Police Department of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. The Security Police Officer, under supervision of the Chief of Security Police will provide services to include; security patrols, preservation of peace, assurance of safety, customer service, report writing, detection and prevention of criminal activity, and effect arrests within the parameters of security police policy, procedures, directives, as well as state and federal law.
EssentialFunctions And Responsibilities
- Represents the Health System by providing assistance and guidance to all patients, staff and visitors to the SJMHS West Market Campuses.
- Patrols and monitors the internal and external activities of the grounds, parking lots, structures, and buildings to ensure compliance with health center policies, state law, and federal laws; responds to and reports any violations and, when appropriate, effects arrests within the parameters of policy/procedures and applicable law.
- Responds to emergencies and public safety incidents (fire/building alarms, medical emergencies, incidents involving weapons, etc.) and exercises reasonable independent judgment within legal parameters to determine detention, search, arrest, and use of force to preserve life and property.
- Completes daily activity and incident reports documenting non-routine activities for referral to the appropriate manager.
- Maintains all security police equipment and completes defibrillator and vehicle maintenance checks; reports safety risks and takes action to reduce or remove hazards where possible.
- Responds to complaints and requests from patients, staff, and visitors (lost property, suspicious activity, improper access, suspicious packages) and provides customer service as needed.
- Operates access control duties (locking/unlocking doors, vehicle lockouts, jumpstarts, wheelchair assistance) and reports any non-functional parking lot gates or violations.
- Self-reports any off-duty police contact, arrests, and court orders that affect firearm ownership/possession; non-reporting may result in termination.
- Maintains confidentiality of information and behaves in alignment with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.
- Performs duties safely, reports hazards, and stays informed about applicable laws and internal policies.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable laws, Trinity Health Standards, and Security Police policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience And Certification/Licensure- High School diploma or equivalent;
Associate’s Degree preferred. - Minimum 1 year of experience in campus security/police, military, or law enforcement required.
- Successfully complete and pass a psychological evaluation.
- Current MCOLES license preferred or the ability to complete MCOLES PA330 Academy Training within six months of hire or at next available academy.
- Maintain the qualifications required by MCOLES and the State of Michigan; maintain a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license.
- Demonstrates the ability to operate an Electronic Control Device (Taser) and perform related use-of-force procedures per policy; maintain Taser certification annually.
