Cook for The Vanguard Hotel in Ann Arbor, MI.
Pay: $21-23/hr
Job PurposePrepare food items in accordance with production requirements and quality standards while maintaining a safe sanitary work environment. Warm, knowledgeable service and helpful guidance reassure guests they’ve made the right choice to stay with us.
Responsibilities- Prepare all food items according to standard recipes and as specified on guest check, following company and brand standards to ensure consistency of product and guest satisfaction.
- Prepare daily requisitions for supplies and food items for production.
- Visually inspect, select, and use only food items of the highest standard in the preparation of all menu items.
- Check and control proper storage of product and portion control to maintain quality.
- Keep all refrigeration, equipment, and storage and working areas clean to comply with health department regulations.
- Demonstrate good working knowledge of sanitation standards and operate kitchen equipment (stoves, ovens, broilers, slicers, steamers).
- Report maintenance issues promptly and properly receive and store food and other deliveries.
- Consult with upper kitchen management daily and with other departments related to Food & Beverage.
- Participate in ongoing hotel programs and improvements in networking; support and make recommendations as needed.
- Participate in physical inventories and guest relations; be readily available/approachable for all guests.
- Follow property-specific recovery plans for guest concerns and extend professionalism and courtesy at all times.
- Adhere to all applicable Company Standard Operating Procedures.
- Be an enthusiastic, helpful, and positive team member; maintain professionalism and maturity in conduct.
- Maintain open communication with each department and respond positively to new ideas; accept critical feedback.
- Support other departments in emergencies and perform other assignments as directed by the supervisor.
- Adhere to all work rules, procedures, and policies as outlined in the associate handbook.
- Safety and Security: properly handle keys and follow emergency procedures and security protocols.
High School diploma / Secondary qualification or equivalent.
Experience with Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Wyndham or Hyatt processes and standards.
Job Requirements- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
- Must be able to read and write to facilitate communication; strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess basic computational ability and be able to read recipes and follow their instructions.
- Ability to physically demonstrate culinary techniques and safe sanitation practices.
- Ability to create appropriate buffet displays up to 5-6 feet in height and set up, maintain, and breakdown displays.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures (e.g.,
-10°F freezers and +110°F kitchens) for up to one hour or more. - Ability to stand and move for extended periods; lift up to 50 lbs; handle knives, pots, and equipment; and operate kitchen machinery.
- Ability to create, build, handle, and dismantle displays up to 8 feet high, including ice carvings.
- Must be able to push/pull carts and equipment up to 250 lbs and adapt to kitchen noise.
- Vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and other common physical requirements for a kitchen role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain government-required licenses, certificates, or permits.
- Being passionate about people and service.
- Strong communication skills with guests and employees.
- Reading and writing abilities for paperwork, issue logging, and information updates.
- Basic math skills for handling cash or credit.
- Problem-solving, motivation, and training abilities are often used.
