Anesthesia technicians are integral members of the anesthesia patient care team who assist anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in a variety of specialized and complex invasive and non-invasive anesthesia procedures. They provide patient care in collaboration with licensed anesthesia providers by preparing the patient and monitoring the patient’s condition during anesthesia procedures. They consider age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs of the patient, ensure acquisition, preparation, and application of equipment and supplies required for anesthesia, and provide on-call technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the Department of Anesthesiology.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Assists anesthesia professional staff as requested.
- Anticipates need for invasive procedures according to daily OR schedule.
- Assists in preparation and draping of patients for invasive monitoring procedures.
- Assists and anticipates needs of anesthesiologists in invasive monitor insertion and procedures (e.g., pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, fiber optic intubation, difficult airway situations).
- Assists with preparation of patients for induction of anesthesia and with positioning; prepares BP cuff, ECG leads, pulse oximeter, transducing devices, etc.
- Performs daily checks of all anesthetizing locations to ensure equipment is available and functioning properly.
- Under direct supervision, assists with regional anesthesia procedures (epidural, spinal, regional, sympathetic, IV regional blocks).
- Gains competence in ultrasound and assists with ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
- Under limited supervision, starts intravenous lines as requested by a licensed anesthesia provider (if certified).
- Assists with difficult airway procedures and maintains related equipment.
- Assists with intraoperative volume resuscitation under guidance of anesthesia providers.
- Monitors EKG, arterial line, and pulmonary artery waveforms during placement and operation as required.
- Participates in emergency situations, including CPR, per policy; checks blood with RN in emergencies per policy.
- Maintains equipment availability in each operating room and supports pre-, peri-, and post-operative anesthesia care.
- Maintains and inventories equipment and supplies; ensures sharps disposal, cleaning areas, and stock in workrooms and stations.
- Performs Pyxis anesthesia medication-related tasks and prepares medications for patient use; supports training of new staff and evaluations.
- Maintains records, logs, QA reports, and complies with Joint Commission guidelines and pharmacy guidelines as applicable.
- Interfaces with other departments to retrieve and restock anesthesia equipment; ensures back-up and on-call carts are ready.
- Performs duties with a focus on patient safety, quality care, and customer satisfaction.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One year formal education preferred (medical terminology, health sciences, EKG, pharmacology helpful).
- 12 months related experience.
- Hospital critical care units preferred.
- Annual BLS certification required.
- Certification by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians is desired.

- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 100% of work time.
- Physical ability to lift, bend, push, and pull; manual dexterity for monitoring equipment; ability to stand for long periods.
- Mechanical aptitude to operate a wide range of technical medical equipment.
- Ability to accept delegation and work as part of a team.
- Maintains professionalism, communication, and proactive support for coworkers and patients.
- Physical stamina as required by role (up to several hundred feet weight considerations).
General supervision is received from manager.
