Responsibilities*

Investigate and analyze patient care grievances per CMS guidelines. Investigate and analyze potential and actual professional liability claims and incidents incorporating the principles of the Michigan Model for early claims resolution. Perform clinical safety management and respond and investigate in real-time to patient safety events with serious harm, including completing staff interviews and clinical reviews, effectively communicating with staff, families and patients.

Provide resources for emotional support for patients and staff involved in acute events. Assist with disclosure of acute events and maintain open communication with patients, families, and staff to help restore and maintain the trusting therapeutic relationship. Prepare summaries of potential and litigated claims for distribution and oral presentation to institutional committees; and lead/participate in patient safety and risk education efforts for the health system.

Assist outside counsel on matters in litigation; negotiate settlements within institutional guidelines.

Adherence to clinical risk and grievance protocols, procedures, and objectives ensuring timely compliance with all regulatory and legal requirements. Report to Michigan Medicine leadership unanticipated outcomes resulting in significant patient harm or death. Analyze data to filter for trends with goal of reducing harm and enhancing patient experience. Advise and train Health Care Staff in assessing, resolving, and preventing incidents of risk to patients.

Prepare professional, thoroughly written communication with patients, families, UMH faculty, staff, and plaintiff attorneys in accordance with regulatory and legal guidelines and timelines. Develop and implement ongoing, professional education to faculty and staff on risk management-related topics including but not limited to the following: disclosure of unanticipated patient outcomes, when to contact Clinical Risk, acute adverse event management, documentation practices, actual case studies with lessons learned, patient terminations, and the Clinical Risk claims management process.

Provide guidance and support for patient/family behavioral concerns and terminations, potential and actual criminal allegations in conjunction with UMH Security and Office of General Counsel. Training required on civil mediation, conflict management, and crisis intervention.
