Description:
Position purpose and responsibilities of the Anesthesia Technician who supports anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in a variety of invasive and non-invasive anesthesia procedures. Responsibilities include patient preparation, monitoring support, equipment preparation and maintenance, and on-call coverage for the Department of Anesthesiology 24/7.
- Assists anesthesia professional staff as requested.
- Anticipates need for invasive procedures according to daily OR schedule.
- Assists in preparation and draping of patients for invasive monitoring procedures.
- Assists and anticipates needs of anesthesiologists in invasive monitor insertion and procedures such as pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, fiber optic intubation, and/or difficult airway situations.
- Assists with the preparation of patients for the induction of anesthesia, including placement of monitoring equipment and assisting with positioning.
- Performs daily checks of all anesthetizing locations to ensure equipment is available and functioning properly.
- Under direct supervision, assists with initiation of regional anesthesia procedures (epidural, spinal, regional blocks).
- Gains competence in ultrasound and assists with ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
- Under limited supervision, starts an intravenous line when requested (if certified).
- Assists with difficult airway procedures and maintenance of equipment.
- Assists with intraoperative volume resuscitation and related monitoring.
- Monitors EKG, arterial lines, and pulmonary artery waveforms during placement.
- In emergencies, may check blood with RN under policy and actively participates in CPR per policy.
- Participates in department call coverage and responds to staff requests promptly.
- Provides technical support in pre-, peri-, and post-operative areas for safe, efficient anesthesia care.
- Maintains availability of equipment in each operating room and prepares transducer lines for monitoring as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge of anesthesia delivery systems, scavenger systems, gas analyzers, EKG, pulse oximeters, and rapid infusion devices.
- Performs duties under pressure and in life-threatening emergencies as required.
- Assembles and maintains specialized equipment (humidification units, warming devices, fiber optic equipment, rapid infusion devices).
- Maintains and cleans anesthesia equipment and workstations; interfaces with other departments for equipment retrieval and cleaning.
- Maintains supply stock, inventories, and QA records; conducts Pyxis anesthesia medication refills and related cart preparation.
- Trains new technicians and assists in evaluations; ensures compliance with Joint Commission guidelines and hospital policies.
- Attends departmental meetings and activities; contributes to patient satisfaction and safe care standards.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information; conducts duties in line with mission and values of the organization.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience and Certification/Licensure- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One year formal education preferred with background in medical terminology, health sciences, EKG, or pharmacology.
- 12 months related experience.
- Hospital critical care units preferred.
- Annual BLS certification required.
- Certification by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians is desired.

- Ability to concentrate and maintain attention to detail during technical tasks and procedures.
- Physical capability to lift and move patients and equipment; standing for prolonged periods; manual dexterity for monitoring equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude to operate technical medical equipment.
- Ability to accept delegation and work as part of a team; proactive in meeting colleagues’ and patients’ needs.
- Physical strength and stamina appropriate for shift requirements.

General supervision is received from manager.
