The Clinical Pharmacist Generalist will rotate through a variety of roles and locations delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care including drug distribution to support excellent patient care. This role will primarily focus on medication distribution (centralized) responsibilities. In this role, the pharmacist will be responsible for order verification, code response, clinical inquiry response, product verification, medication distribution oversight, technician functional supervision, automation systems, and inventory control.

There may be opportunities for clinical pharmacist (de-centralized) roles. In these roles, the pharmacist will support 3-4 care teams, actively participate in multidisciplinary patient rounds, review and verify medication orders, and provide dosage adjustments per pharmacy policies for anticoagulation, pharmacokinetic antimicrobials, renally dosed medications and parenteral nutrition. Additional responsibilities include conducting daily profile reviews and serving as preceptor for University of Michigan College of Pharmacy IPPE and APPE students.

Responsibilities*

CHARACTERISTIC

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • After successful orientation and training, the pharmacist generalist will rotate through a variety of roles and locations spending a majority of their time in a medication distribution (centralized) role. We offer pharmacy services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • This position will include a mixture of morning, afternoon, and midnight shifts.
  • Specific Centralized and Decentralized responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) the following:
    • Service Based, Team Pharmacist:
      Activities include interdisciplinary rounding, comprehensive profile reviews, pharmacokinetic monitoring and dosing, anticoagulation therapy monitoring and dosing, discharge counseling, renal dosing, parenteral nutrition monitoring and adjustments, pharmacy student precepting, and nurse/prescriber education.
    • D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion Main Pharmacy and University Hospital Central Pharmacy:
      Operational and clinical activities that include order verification, code response, clinical inquiry response, product verification, medication distribution oversight, technician management, pharmacy student precepting, Pyxis management, and inventory control.
    • Operating Room Pharmacy Satellites:
      Peri-operative medication management (i.e. antimicrobial prophylaxis, support for pain management, anticoagulants and blood factors) and narcotic control and distribution including quality control to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and quality measures.
    • Other Pharmacy Satellites (pending department need) - (Emergency Department, OR, Clean Room, Cardiovascular Center):
      Activities include central order verification, medication question triage, product compounding and verification, investigational drug management, controlled substances management, and functional supervision of technical staff working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Able to prioritize daily responsibilities with accuracy and dependability

  • Effectively communicate with pharmacy team members, other healthcare professionals, employees, patients, and visitors
  • Accurately and efficiently interpret and process medication orders, labels, and documentation.

Teaching
