OverviewThe Controller will oversee the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, audit coordination, and grant-related financial activity. This role works closely with leadership and external partners and regularly presents financial information to the Board of Directors. The Controller will also support operational functions including payroll, accounts payable, and financial compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Manage the full month-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Reconcile bank accounts, investments, employee receivables, and grant-related refundable advances
- Maintain and update documentation, templates, and checklists for recurring monthly processes
- Prepare annual audit schedules, work papers, and auditor communications
- Coordinate annual financial and international grant audits
- Support CPA firm with preparation and filing of Forms 990, 990-T, and 5500
- Ensure compliance with all nonprofit legal, tax, and corporate requirements
- Allocate and reclassify expenses, salaries, benefits, and shared costs across programs and committees
- Oversee internal and external grant administration and reporting
- Supervise and support part-time grant staff as needed
- Manage and master multiple accounting systems and software platforms, including import and allocation modules
- Track cash flow and prepare financial projections
- Review and approve biweekly payroll through Paylocity in coordination with outsourced HR/payroll partners
- Oversee accounts payable, including weekly payment processing and system imports
- Prepare and manage payroll documentation, insurance tracking, and related financial records
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience
- Experience preparing and presenting financial information to a Board of Directors
Preferred
- Prior experience using MIP accounting software
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a nonprofit setting
