Avalon Non Profit Housing Corporation is a supportive housing provider created in 1992 as a long‑term solution to address homelessness. Avalon and its subsidiaries own and operate apartments at sites throughout Ann Arbor, manage rent vouchers with private landlords, and partner with the Ann Arbor Housing Commission to provide housing alternatives for formerly homeless adults and families throughout Washtenaw County.
Avalon is looking for a talented and dedicated person with financial expertise and a commitment to social justice to fill the role of Director of Finance. The Director of Finance will be a strategic thought partner, a key member of Avalon’s Executive Team, and will work closely with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees to oversee Avalon’s complex financial management and grant compliance.
The successful candidate will be a hands‑on, participative manager who leads and mentors an internal team in finance, business planning and budgeting, and financial grant management and compliance.
The Director of Finance will play a critical role in partnering with the Executive Team on strategic decision‑making and operations as Avalon Housing continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. - Work with leaders in the organization in the development and monitoring of annual and multi‑year budgets.
- Oversee financial investment, i.e., stocks, bonds, etc., that Avalon may maintain.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, Executive Team, and Board of Trustees in developing sustainable business strategies and ensuring long‑term financial stability.
- Analyze and present financial reports accurately and in a timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments; oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, and assess any necessary changes.
- Oversee and lead collaborative annual budgeting and planning processes in conjunction with the Executive Director; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; keep the agency abreast of the organization’s financial status.
- Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
- Oversee accounts payables and receivables.
- Implement a robust contract management and financial reporting system; ensure the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow support operational requirements.
- Be an integral part of the Real Estate Development team, reviewing and creating proformas and staff allocations as Avalon and its subsidiaries continue to develop their physical asset portfolio.
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
- Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Board of Trustees.
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners, including third‑party vendors and consultants, in financial grant management, ensuring compliance with grant obligations related to financial oversight.
