The Tooling Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, development, and launch of tooling used in manufacturing operations. This role works closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure tooling meets program requirements for cost, timing, quality, and performance. The Tooling Engineer manages tooling projects from concept through launch, coordinates with internal teams and external tool shops, and supports continuous improvement efforts to enhance tooling reliability and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead tooling work for new tools and changes to existing tools
  • Review tooling requests to confirm requirements, cost, timing, and labor needs
  • Design tooling for prototype and production use
  • Participate in tooling and product design reviews
  • Work with outside tool shops to source and purchase tooling
  • Manage tooling projects from start through launch
  • Track project schedules, costs, and progress
  • Maintain basic project documentation and reports
  • Review tool shop performance and identify improvement opportunities
  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams
  • Support additional engineering projects as needed
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required
Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Progressive experience in tooling, manufacturing, or engineering roles
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, production tooling, and tooling systems
  • Experience supporting prototype and production tooling
  • Ability to manage tooling projects, including cost estimates, timing, and budgets
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross‑functionally
  • Proficiency with common engineering and office software for documentation and reporting
  • Experience working with suppliers and external tool shops
  • Ability to identify and implement tooling improvements and process enhancements
  • At senior levels, experience leading complex tooling programs, mentoring engineers, and working independently
