The OpportunityAs Senior Electrical Engineer
, you will have the opportunity to:
- Function as project lead and technical expert, with potential management/administrative responsibilities on assigned Conventional Power Generation Projects and Teams.
- Develop electrical drawing deliverables including: one line and three line diagrams, electrical motor schematics, breaker control schematics and wiring diagrams, power cable sizing and cable schedules, and complex engineering calculations (load flow, short circuit, motor starting (ETAP or SKM), arc flash analysis (ETAP or SKM), protective relay settings, battery and charger sizing).
- Develop electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.
- Create man hour budgets and project/scheduling plans for proposals.
- Attend on-site meetings, investigate existing conditions, interface with clients, and provide support during construction.
- Extensively use Microsoft Office, Project Wise, ETAP, SKM, AutoCAD to view and manipulate engineering drawing files.
The ideal candidate for this position is located or willing to relocate to one of the Black & Veatch Flagship Power Offices:
Overland Park, KS (Kansas City);
Cary, NC (Raleigh); or Ann Arbor, MI

- Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes; may own/update engineering standards and guides; provide technical guidance on projects/disciplines.
- Ensure compliance with B&V quality program; support continuous improvement, change management and risk management.
- Prepare complex engineering deliverables for multiple projects; perform research and recommend equipment/material selections; manage data for engineering work.
- Perform complex engineering calculations; manage budget, schedule, and quality; develop advanced engineering solutions; oversee work of lower-level engineers; may lead production teams or coordinate multiple disciplines.
- Coordinate with internal/external team members on complex projects; define project schedules for single or multiple disciplines.
- Identify client interests and drivers; communicate them to the project team and adapt work accordingly.
- Support business development or pursuit activities; identify future client needs and position B&V accordingly.
- Serve as technical specialist in a broad or specialized area; apply advanced concepts to complex problems; may mentor others and participate in professional societies.
- Oversee performance management, career development, and related HR activities as applicable.
Management Responsibilities
Supervises work of others; may hire, discipline, and administer pay for subordinates.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project Lead experience and expertise in utility-scale conventional power generation design.
- Engineering consulting design experience in LV/MV conventional power generation (e.g., combined cycle, simple cycle plants).
- QA/QC and project lead experience.
- Ability to manage schedules and manhours budgets.
- Familiarity with NEC and IEEE/ANSI standards.
- Experience with electrical equipment including MV/LV switch gear, transformers, panels, breakers, protective relays, batteries, cables, and related components.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 11 years related work experience.
- Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries (PE license where required).
