The Opportunity

The BESS Conceptual Design Manager functions as a technical specialist or lead in support of the Distributed Infrastructure Solution Pursuits Team. Under general direction, develops and applies advanced engineering techniques and approaches to complex problems. May provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on proposals with medium to high risk. May be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output.

Black & Veatch’s Technology, Commercial & Industrial Sector is a specialized group focused on the latest needs for clients in a fast-growth technology-led arena, including generative AI computing, gigafactories, bio/ag tech, data centers and distributed infrastructure. You will be involved in cutting-edge technology and work with a team that moves quickly.

Professionals in Conceptual Design Manager roles interface with Segment, Solution and Operations leadership and with Client Account Manager, Project Director and Project Manager to develop conceptual designs in support of EPC BESS projects. Designs, calculations, and specifications must align with the proposal execution strategy, schedule, value propositions and win strategy. This role is designed to prepare professionals for accelerated career growth leading complex engineering and EPC projects.

Please note: This is a Hybrid position at any one of our Regional Offices.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards:

  • Provides guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black & Veatch policies
  • Assists in developing and maintaining engineering standards
  • Provides technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines

Quality/Continuous Improvement:

  • Independently applies knowledge and complies with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks
  • May ensure compliance with quality program
  • Provides guidance to others
  • Supports continuous improvement and change management
  • Integrates lessons learned from execution into active pursuit cycles

Engineering Deliverable Production:

  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects
  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment/materials selection
  • Oversees data collection and management for engineering work
  • Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods
  • Manages assigned budget, schedule and quality requirements
  • Applies advanced engineering techniques to problems
  • Delegates and supervises work of younger engineers

Pursuit Coordination:

  • Coordinates with pursuit team members in support of conceptual design deliverables and engineering turnover

Client Focus:

  • Assists with identification of key client interests, drivers, and win strategies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and design guides/standards related to the discipline
  • Understanding of BESS general arrangement drawings
  • Experience with specifying and procuring electrical equipment
  • Ability to work within a schedule and manhours budget
  • Familiar with NEC and IEEE/ANSI standards
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience
  • Pre-employment onboarding requirements may include background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search as required by law
