Black & Veatch is seeking an experienced EHV (345kV+) Engineering Specialist with 8‑10 years of engineering experience for substations and transmission lines. The role requires deep knowledge of EHV power systems, design standards, and the ability to lead technical teams and client engagements.
Key Responsibilities- Act as a technical specialist for EHV transmission level voltage classes.
- Make engineering calculation recommendations to influence risk mitigation through project execution plans.
- Communicate EHV engineering calculation capabilities to internal and external clients to support project capture and development.
- Apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts, and approaches to develop, maintain, and update EHV engineering standards.
- Provide technical leadership and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and standards.
- Apply Black & Veatch quality programs, review and verify work accuracy, and promote QA/QC standards.
- Effectively communicate client goals and priorities to project teams and develop strategies to integrate these drivers.
- Engage directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure successful project delivery.
- Mentor team members and offer technical direction across disciplines.
- Lead project efforts including schedule, budget, and resource management.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to manage and deliver complex, multidisciplinary projects.
- Support proposal development, including scope of work, engineering estimates, and schedules.
- Manage or contribute to multiple high‑impact projects simultaneously.
- Develop clear written communications and facilitate effective collaboration with team members and clients.
- Work in a team environment.
- Utilize knowledge of NERC reliability regions (e.g., PJM, ERCOT, MISO).
- Develop knowledge and provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, and engineering codes.
- Ensure compliance with Black & Veatch quality program and continuous improvement efforts.
- Prepare complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; perform research and develop recommendations.
- Lead production teams, coordinate multiple discipline activity, and serve as responsible charge for projects.
- Coordinate with all team members on moderately complex projects.
- Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers, communicate them to the team, and develop approaches to accommodate.
- Support business development or pursuit activities.
- Apply advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique problems.
- Provide mentoring and recognize lower level professionals; assist with performance management.
- Assist with resource management strategy and engineering resources for small groups.
- Ensure policies, procedures and processes are implemented and communicated for the work group.
- Approve timesheets and expense reports.
- 8–10 years of experience performing EHV engineering planning and design for substations and transmission lines.
- Experience with upfront planning, physical design, protection & control design, relaying design, and design calculations.
- Experience performing EHV engineering calculations such as audible noise/corona, electric fields, lightning, insulation coordination, transient recovery voltage, overvoltages, EMF, and grounding.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a recognized accredited program.
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License (U.S. PE), preferred.
