1.0 FTE Counseling Position

Summary:
Full-time High School Counselor with School Counselor certificate with (NT), (SCL), (PEASC) or equivalent to support students socially, emotionally, and academically in the Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium at Washtenaw International High School/ Middle Academy. Work in a diverse, equity-centered, collaborative, innovative International Baccalaureate school with academically focused and growth minded students, staff, and families.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

Assume school counselor responsibilities including:
  • Work collaborative and positively with diverse students and families to promote social, emotional, and academic development for all students, especially underrepresented students: students of color and economically disadvantaged students
  • Develop academic plans of support in partnership with students, families, faculty and administrator, which include ongoing communication, documentation, collaboration to support students with academic support needs
  • Work with the school scheduler and administration to develop and maintain student schedules based on student and school needs
  • Work collaboratively with the Student Support team with the development, implementation, and assessment of counseling programs to support students including Peer to Peer, TRAILS, and girls and boys leadership groups
  • Provide one on one and group counseling focused on mental health, academic, social and emotional development
  • Prioritize and engage in counseling initiatives that promote equity and inclusion, especially for underserved students of color and students with economic disadvantages
  • Engage in learning and modeling cultural proficiency and social justice practices
  • Engage in and promote trauma-informed practices to support students recovering from trauma and grief
  • Present mental health and counseling initiatives to staff, students, and families to educate the community about mental health as well as promote strategies to manage anxiety, depression, and other mental health symptoms and illnesses
  • Communicate regularly with students, staff, and families to partner on solutions to support student achievement
  • Serve on the Building Intervention Team to support students' academic, mental health, and wellness goals
  • Work collaboratively with the Student Support Team to support students and develop plans of support
  • Work collaboratively with the administrative team to address student concerns with academic, social, and emotional needs
  • Collect, examine, and share data on student achievement and interventions for support
  • Participate in Professional Development relevant to the International Baccalaureate
  • Collaboratively develop and lead Professional Learning focused on trauma-informed practices, mental health awareness, and stress management
  • Work to partner with community programs to support students with social, emotional, economic, and academic needs
  • Build partnerships with students, staff, and families to promote a growth mindset and fail forward culture of learning
  • Daily work schedule Monday - Friday, 7:25 am-3:15 pm.
  • Support enrichment programs and sponsor student-led clubs as applicable
  • Support an International focus across the curriculum, equity-focused, and trauma informed practices.
  • Meet counseling and compliance requirements of the International Baccalaureate program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal
Qualifications:
Valid Michigan School Counseling certification (NT), (SCL), (PEASC) 0r equivalent required. Preference for candidates with experience working with diverse students and families. Secondary school counseling experience preferred.


Education and/or

Experience:

Qualification and certification to serve on the Student Support Team. Experience, qualification and interest in sponsoring co-curricular activities such as Mental Health Awareness club, TRAILS, Restorative Practices Peer Mediation, Growth Mindset Club, etc.


Language

Skills:

Highly proficient in written and verbal communication with a particular emphasis on subject area specific competence and interpersonal communications.


Technical

Skills:

Ability to use computer technology for research, data management, communication and other instruction. Experience with Google classroom, Google Drive, , and Power School preferred.
