The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) is a core faculty member in the PA program, and manages and administers program compliance with the requirements of ARC-PA Standards. This position receives a 20-credit administrative release in order to fulfill clinical rotation oversight responsibilities. This is an on-site position, requiring weekly campus attendance in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Job Summary:
The Physician Assistant Program Director of Clinical Education (DCE) position will involve teaching, evaluation, advisement, and mentoring of physician assistant students primarily in the clinical and classroom settings. The Director of Clinical Education is responsible for coordinating, identifying, developing, and maintaining clinical sites for Physician Assistant student clinical rotations, as well as ongoing monitoring of students at clinical sites.
- Establish new clinical sites and preceptorships;
- Travel to clinical sites to evaluate student progress and site qualifications per ARC-PA standards;
- Evaluate the credentials and qualifications of preceptors and monitor preceptor abilities in educating PA students;
- Monitor clinical sites in regard to student access to the appropriate number of patient encounters; demographics and types of encounters; depth of clinical experiences; student safety; and preceptor oversight and feedback
- Monitor student progress and coordinate academic advising for clinical year students;
- Provide feedback to instructors/preceptors to monitor teaching efficacy based on student evaluation data;
- Design End of Rotation (EOR) experiences in order to foster continuing education and student evaluation of program competencies during the clinical year;
- Administer and evaluate EOR exams, Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE's), instructional information, and other educational experiences during the clinical year;
- Provide remedial instruction as required throughout the clinical year;
- Advise students with academic and social or emotional concerns, referring them to appropriate personnel as needed;
- Participate in the design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of PA program curriculum including, but not limited to, collection of both qualitative and quantitative data for each student at each clinical site; and for each preceptor at each clinical site;
- Consult with Program Director immediately with any concerns regarding the clinical student's educational experience, number of patient encounters, safety issues, oversight or feedback issues, or anything else that may need to be evaluated during a student's clinical experience;
- Provide guidance and direction to program staff and faculty involved in the coordination and instruction of the clinical year curriculum;
- Update and maintain the clinical tracking software system (Exxat) as required;
- Monitor student logging, recognizing and addressing any deficiencies in exposure to required clinical settings and patient demographics throughout the clinical year;
- Review preceptor evaluations of the student at the middle and end of every rotation to identify any deficiencies and allow for student remediation either during the remainder of the rotation or upon return to campus on EOR days;
- Monitor students' evaluations of the preceptor to identify any deficiencies noted by the students and to evaluate and monitor the site/preceptor for remediation or cessation of that clinical site, as necessary;
- Oversee student compliance with health and background check requirements necessary for clinical placement;
- Assist the Program Director in maintaining ongoing data collection and evaluating and reporting effectiveness of the clinical year curriculum to be incorporated in the ongoing self-study;
- Review annually, and edit as necessary, each rotation syllabus as well as the clinical year handbook;
- Maintain up-to-date Canvas resources to provide students with information including: rotation syllabi, course expectations, and required assessments;
- Attend PA program faculty meetings;
- Participate in admissions process and PA student selection;
- Assist in the search process for selecting PA program faculty;
