Position: Full-Time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic

The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for full‑time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic.

Applications are being accepted that will establish an eligibility list in June 2026 for full‑time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic. Written and physical ability evaluations are required for all positions. Information packets will be emailed to qualified applicants explaining the written and physical ability evaluation process and applicable dates for completing each process.

Successful completion of post‑offer criminal background screening, drug test, psychological and medical physical is required. Excellent wage and benefit package.

Work schedule is a 24‑hour on / 48‑hour off rotation averaging 2,912 hours per year after attending the required Fire and EMS Academy and Paramedic Training, if applicable. Effective 07/01/2025, starting salary pay is: EMT $62,655, Paramedic $70,395–$81,492 depending on years of experience. A new contract will take effect on July 1, 2026.

Responsibilities

Responds to emergencies and performs pre‑hospital care, fire suppression activities, rescue, damage control, and property preservation.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Ability to write in English with a minimum number of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co‑workers and function as a team member.
  • Shall be enrolled and attending an Emergency Medical Technician Program or be certified as an EMT or Paramedic at the time of application.
Required Special Qualifications
  • Shall possess a current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Services certification at time of hire.
  • Paramedic certification must be obtained within the agreed upon timeframe after hire date.
  • Shall obtain IFSAC Fire Fighter I, II and Hazardous Material Operations, ICSC 100, 200, 700 and 800 Level certifications throughout employment.
  • Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa and be insurable to operate city vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a physical ability test.

    Must be able to pass the physical exam per the requirements of the Iowa Municipal Fire and Police and Retirement System for FT personnel.
Disqualifying Factors

Actions that will disqualify you from the applications process.

  • Conviction (including deferred charge) for OWI/DUI in the last five (5) years.
  • Misdemeanor drug offenses within the past five (5) years.
  • Any forgery, alteration or intentional misrepresentation of facts on application or during the hiring process.

The following actions may disqualify you from the application process; disqualifier is determined at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief.

  • Other than honorable discharge from the military.
  • Missing scheduled appointments during the hiring process without permission.
  • Unfavorable recommendations for hire by references, employers, landlords, or professional consultant engaged by the Ankeny Fire Department.
  • Any disciplinary action as deemed by Iowa Department of Public Health-Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services.

  • Fire Fighter I, II, Hazmat Operations, ICSC 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications if you have them

    • Successful Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium written certification
    • Successful Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium physical ability evaluation (PAE)
    • Successful Nationally Recognized CPAT Card

  • Firefighting and emergency response tasks can be very difficult, and are physically and psychologically demanding.
  • Firefighting and emergency response personnel may be exposed to many toxic substances during incidents.
  • Hazardous materials incidents may also involve exposures to a wide variety of toxic materials.
