The role?An Instrument Technician – Level 1(entry/junior level) is typically expected to have foundational technical skills, basic theoretical knowledge, and strong safety awareness, rather than deep hands‑on mastery. Requirements can vary by industry (oil & gas, manufacturing, power, pharmaceuticals), but the core skill set is fairly consistent.
Main Responsibilities- Understanding of industrial instrumentation fundamentals
- Pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement
- Basic knowledge of sensors and transmitters
- RTDs, thermocouples, pressure transmitters, flow meters
- Familiarity with control loops
- Process variable (PV), setpoint (SP), output
- Introductory understanding of PLC/DCS systems (not programming)
- Ability to read basic P&IDs and instrument data sheets
- Assist with instrument calibration
- Pressure gauges
- Temperature devices
- Perform simple inspections
- Visual checks
- Cleaning instruments
- Follow maintenance procedures and checklists
- Record readings and maintenance data accurately
- Basic electrical theory
- Voltage, current, resistance (Ohm’s Law)
- Ability to identify:
- Wiring diagrams
- Terminal blocks
- Cable types and grounding
- Basic hand tools usage
- Multimeter (voltage, current, resistance)
- Calibrators (under supervision)
- Mechanical skills:
- Mounting instruments
- Tubing and fittings (compression fittings basics)
- Previous experience in the oil and gas or related industries.
- Technical diploma, trade certificate, or apprenticeship (or in progress)
- Basic electrical or instrumentation training
- Safety certifications (varies by region):
- First Aid
- H2S (oil & gas)
- Confined Space
