The Materials and Process Engineering Department, which functions within Mechanical Engineering, is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our Design and Development team in Andover, MA. This role is to support program hardware design and development and production activities. A qualified candidate will have a background and experience in evaluating materials and processes used within a product design and/or manufacturing.
This position offers the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and support failure analysis activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials and validation and verification that materials and processes used on product meet design and program requirements. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures and documentation of results.
Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements.
- Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirements.
- Working closely with design personnel in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new and updated designs.
- Supporting product production and supplier support activities.
- Providing evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes.
- Participate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysis.
- Ensure labor costs and estimated completion schedules provided by the Materials and Process Engineering Sections are negotiated, understood, and meet product/program commitments.
- Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience.
- Experience in materials selection (i.e., qualification, analysis, testing, design or development).
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering.
- Experience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense Industry.
- Experience working with engineering drawings.
- Experience working with and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processes.
- Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques.
- Experience related to Material Review Boards, Material and Process Change Boards, Risk Boards, and Engineering Review Boards.
- Experience with project milestones such as preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews.
- Earned Valued certification or experience.
- Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis and obsolescence investigations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills.
