Mission StatementAndover Bread Loaf (ABL) reimagines education based on a pedagogy of care that, through writing and the arts, ignites change in youth, adults, and educators by providing the space, trust, and freedom for them to develop their intellectual, leadership, and collaborative skills. Using these tools, they can transform themselves and their communities while working toward social justice.
Role DescriptionABL Writing Leaders (WLs) are youth, exposed to and trained in democratic pedagogies who work with other youth leaders to create, staff, and lead workshops and programs. Writing Leaders will work under the guidance of ABL Directors and Coordinators to inspire participants to love writing and to use it as a form of self-expression and transformation. WLs serve as literary role models that create, staff, and lead weekly workshops and programming.
WLs are required to attend our mandatory training sessions that happen every first Tuesday of the month. Flexibility and adaptation are key characteristics of a Writing Leader since work environment and schedules are dependent on Collective availability.
- Co‑develop and facilitate workshop lesson plans following the ABL model with fellow WLs for a range of programs including but not limited to:
- Family Literacy Nights
- After School Enrichment series
- Log Cabin events
- Lawrence Student Writers Workshop recruitment efforts
- Our annual Fall and Spring Conferences
- Next Gen site work
- Writing & Arts Library Camp
- ABL Collective events
- Open mics’
- Community Events
- Recruitment Events
- WLs must arrive on time, prepared, and present for the entirety of the workshop (time frames are site specific and will be provided by the Program Coordinator at least a week in advance).
- Assist in the physical and educational set up and breakdown for all workshop and event spaces.
- WLs are expected to co‑write curriculum for programming and engage in reflective practices that inform ABL pedagogy.
- Administrative tasks such as self-reporting hours/tasks, documentation of events, data gathering alongside Program Coordinator, and communicating across various platforms such as Teams, Google, and Instagram.
- Attend weekly 1‑on‑1s with Program Coordinator.
- This role is flexible and depends on programming needs and applicants’ personal availability. The job will not exceed more than 15 hours a week.
