About

The Role

As an Overnight ICU Assistant, you'll play a vital role in supporting our veterinarians and technicians in caring for hospitalized and critical patients throughout the night. This position is ideal for someone who is detail‑oriented, calm under pressure, and passionate about animal care—especially during crucial moments.

Common ICU Cases You'll Encounter

We’re looking for someone with a basic working knowledge of critical care situations typically seen in veterinary ICU, including:

  • Trauma cases – such as vehicular injuries or bite wounds requiring fluid resuscitation and close monitoring
  • Post‑operative care – especially for patients recovering from emergency surgeries (e.g., foreign body removal, splenectomy)
  • Sepsis and shock – monitoring vital trends and assisting in stabilization protocols
  • Respiratory distress – including patients on oxygen cages or nebulization therapy
  • Toxin ingestion – assisting with decontamination and supportive care
  • Pancreatitis and GI emergencies – managing nausea, vomiting, and rehydration therapy
  • Neurological events – such as seizures or vestibular disease requiring observation
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of veterinary assistant experience, preferably in emergency or critical care settings.
  • Comfortable working independently during overnight shifts.
  • Knowledge of veterinary terminology, patient restraint, and ICU protocols.
  • Ability to multitask in a high‑pressure environment.
  • Strong observational and communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift 40+ lbs and work on your feet for extended periods.
What You’ll Do
  • Monitor and document patient vitals (TPR, CRT, behavior changes).
  • Assist with administering medications and fluid therapy under supervision.
  • Support in emergency procedures and surgical prep as needed.
  • Keep the ICU area clean, stocked, and organized.
  • Provide comfort and compassionate care to patients overnight.
  • Communicate effectively with the medical team about patient status.
Perks + Benefits
  • Competitive pay, based on experience + overnight differential
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance (some plans include free outpatient mental health care)
  • Generous CE allowance + paid CE time
  • Uniform allowance
  • Pet care discounts for your personal pets
  • PTO, floating holidays, parental leave, and military leave
  • A robust Employee Assistance Program (from finances to wellness and everything in between)
  • Access to Encore Vet Group’s library of training, CE, and career development resources
  • A 401(k) with up to 5% company match.
