We are hiring immediately for full time and part time PATIENT OBSERVATION ASSISTANT positions.

Location:

Job Summary

Summary: Provides visual and audible observation of assigned patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and unit manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Visually and audibly monitor the assigned patient’s condition and behavior at all times.
  • Complete observation reports at established intervals.
  • Take initiative in compassionately rendering service or responding to needs. Interact hospitably, cheerfully and supportively with staff, patients, visitors and coworkers.
  • Remain at the bedside of the assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
  • Verbal guidance to redirect the patient from engaging in at-risk behaviors.
  • Seek help or advice as soon as possible when the patient appears to be in medical distress or poses a threat, and escalate to assigned medical professionals.
  • Participate in collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Ensure patient environment is safe; report safety hazards to the charge nurse. Remove visible hazards and report as appropriate.
  • Assist in calming and/or reorienting the patient in cases of agitation or confusion.
  • Assist with keeping the patient’s room safe and orderly.
  • Accompany the patient when diagnostic testing is required.
  • Immediately summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or exhibits unusual behavior or verbalizations. Report any potentially dangerous behavior or concerning conversations to the nurse.
  • Participate in hand-off of pertinent information about the patient when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift. Arrange coverage around meal breaks with the nurse and inform the nurse before leaving the patient for any reason.
  • Assist the patient with ordering dietary tray and setting up the patient’s meal tray; assist with basic positioning of the patient; assist with patient wheelchair rides and/or ambulation if the patient is stable and gait has been previously determined safe by the nurse.
  • Respond rapidly and thoroughly to emergencies and special needs.
  • Accept suggestions and direction from supervisors and hospital staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of department policies and procedures. Adhere to attendance, break, behavior, dress, personal hygiene, and safety codes.
  • Honor all confidentiality and other regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in department and hospital education programs.
  • Assist other associates as necessary and respond to direction as provided.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent is required
  • Current CPR AED or Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS-HCP) certification required within 30 days of hire, if required at the facility
