First Mate - Temporary (Landing Craft Vessel) (Transportation)
First Mate is a temporary position on the M/V Alaskan Challenger, delivering freight to off-grid hatcheries in Prince William Sound. The position requires living aboard the vessel during work rotations: four weeks on and two weeks off.
Seaday exempt wage begins at $425/day; dock and boatyard non-exempt wage is $37.82/hour. Seadays are paid for days worked on the vessel while navigating. Boatyard work is paid hourly for hours worked while stationed for dock/harbor/boatyard work.
Anticipated Work Schedule- 03/16 Arrival into Cordova, AK (Vessel in shipyard)
- 03/17 - 03/24 Vessel Shipyard Duties, Orientation, and Sea Trials
- 03/24 - 12/18 Vessel Freight Services to PWS Hatcheries (observe rotation schedule)

- Work performed on the vessel while at sea, in port, shipyard, or hatchery location as duties require.
- Must be able to move freely; work outdoors in all weather conditions; lift and carry 50 pounds; climb stairs and ladders; work around water on docks and floats.
- Must be able to climb aboard and about vessels and small aircraft; dexterity to maneuver through tight spaces and maintain good balance on uneven, wet surfaces and in rough water.
- Use radios, compasses, electronic navigational equipment, telephones and computers unimpaired.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Work closely with the Captain, maintain vessel freight readiness, administer vessel operations, maintain and log all safety equipment, and supervise vessel crew members while on deck.
- Assume Captain's duties in absence.
- Safety: responsible for crew safety while on deck and during maintenance operations; conduct and maintain a log for safety drills and all safety equipment; maintain the SDS file.
- Delivery Services: supervise deck personnel while stowing and unloading cargo, freight delivery vehicles, or passengers.
- Vessel Maintenance: maintain vessel and equipment to comply with Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection and participate in Coast Guard inspections; develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedule; ensure machinery and equipment are in good working order.
- Administrative: inventory and develop needs list for supply planning and ordering; maintain logs required by USCG for all maintenance performed.
- Supervises Crew: responsible for on-deck safety, safe loading, and unloading operations and maintenance operations ensuring OSHA standards are met.
