Overview
The Alternative Site Cafeteria Manager I performs daily tasks to ensure meals are prepared on schedule and according to food safety guidelines. This position prepares and serves two types of food service, namely elementary pre-plate and secondary open food service. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Responsibilities- Manage all food and supply inventories, ordering, production records, cash handling procedures, bank deposits and timely submission of any required paperwork to the Student Nutrition office.
- Know and understand USDA and State guidelines for meal patterns and service requirements.
- Monitor and record all kitchen equipment temperatures, and ensure proper food heating and cooling times and temperatures according to HACCP requirements.
- Ensure sanitation and food safety practices are observed and maintained.
- Oversee two types of food service (serving and preparing): elementary pre-plate and middle/secondary open food service.
- Perform daily routine tasks to ensure lunches are prepared on schedule for the estimated number of students.
- Maintain proper food serving techniques and portion controls.
- Ensure timely preparation of all meal programs and organize and assign work to kitchen staff when applicable.
- Adhere to all Student Nutrition Department and Anchorage School District policies and procedures.
- Resolve complaints in a timely and equitable manner and communicate concerns to supervisor.
- Submit maintenance requests and report any major maintenance problems to supervisor.
- Maintain NSLP compliance for Free and Reduced meals at the point of sale, and keep accurate records in accordance with Student Nutrition Department and USDA requirements.
- Plan, organize and make decisions independently in a fast-paced work environment within limited timelines.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate school cafeteria assistants.
- Coordinate employee timecards and leave requests with supervisor as needed.
- Assign and direct student aides and substitute employees as needed.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with a broad diversity of students, staff, ASD staff, and the public.
- A high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement.
- Two years of responsible experience in a large-scale food service operation including food preparation, proper food handling, and food safety and sanitation.
- Proficiency in cashiering and working with Microsoft Office.
- Proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
- Must attend the eight-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety class and pass the associated examination within 21 calendar days from date of hire into the position.
- One year of supervisory experience, including planning and directing employees' daily work schedule and tasks.
- Evidence of work experience providing training in staff kitchen responsibilities.
- Experience with food service point of sale and inventory management systems.
- Previous experience as a food service manager.
