Responsibilities
North Star Behavioral Health Systems is seeking an experienced Cook to join our outstanding team. The cook is responsible for participating in the provision of quality meals and nutritional services to patients, staff, and guests.
- Prepares meals for patients, employees, medical staff, and visitors.
- Takes and records meal temperatures at meal time.
- Serves meals to all cafeteria customers, ensuring food is placed on the serving line on time and condiments needed for that meal are set out.
- Accepts and reconciles deliveries and puts away stock; promptly receives deliveries when notified of their arrival, checking product and sending back anything not acceptable.
- Cleans work area as necessary or assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); workload may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts. Employees are occasionally exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and loud noise levels.
Physical and Mental DemandsThe position requires the ability to communicate effectively with employees, utilize communication equipment, provide physical assistance to patients (ambulatory, non‑ambulatory, physically aggressive), and spend a great deal of time on a computer. Physical demands include standing for long periods, lifting or exerting force up to 50 lbs., and maintaining basic visual and auditory functions. Mental demands include emotional stability, physical stamina, and the ability to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
Equipment/MaterialsUsed
Stove, trash bins, oven, microwave oven, steamer, toaster, fryer, coffee maker, grill, slicer, food processor, electric mixer, and other kitchen equipment.
Qualifications- High School Diploma.
- Previous cooking experience required.
- State of Alaska background check and drug testing.
- Food handlers card within 30 days of hire.
- Serv Safe certification within 6 months of hire.
- Special training, knowledge and skills specific to cooking and/or program‑specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
- Completion of all mandatory in‑services annually.
- Yearly testing for tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x‑ray.
- Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision and work successfully under highly stressful conditions.
- Effective reading and communication skills, both written and verbal.
