SummaryProvides oversight of the activities on a nursing unit during a specific shift, serves as a resource to staff, directs patient flow, mentors staff, ensures appropriate utilization of resources, and provides oversight for quality care that satisfies patients.
Responsibilities- Performs all duties included in the registered nurse job description.
- Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards and regulations; identifies short- and long-term professional goals.
- Maintains current knowledge; serves as a resource on departmental policies and procedures; assists in education and ensuring compliance.
- Finds creative solutions to issues; contributes to process and quality improvement.
- Uses ANA scope and standards of practice and the code of ethics for nurses as the foundation of nursing practice.
- Mentors others in competency, documentation, equipment, plan of care, and patient safety goals; participates in in-service education.
- Coordinates patient flow and ensures timely, effective care; expedites admissions when beds are ready.
- Provides and ensures quality patient care; communicates effectively with patients and families; participates in rounds and patient satisfaction activities.
- Ensures staff operate within scope and participate in educational opportunities; addresses behavior and problem-solving.
- Performs routine environment of care rounds and resolves issues; protects patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Participates on committees as requested; assists with staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments to meet needs efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Attends bed meetings; assists with hiring, onboarding, precepting, coaching, and evaluating staff; evaluates care and coaches for improvement.
- Maintains effective relationships with staff and physicians; serves as a resource for nursing bundles and evidence-based practice.
- Maintains professional, timely communication with physicians, departments, patients, families, and EMS partners.
- Provides departmental leadership in the absence of the unit director/manager; ensures productivity and efficient patient flow.
- Models teamwork; assists with admissions and bed management; supports staff well-being and family-centered care.
