Job DetailsFusion Medical Staffing is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician (MLT)- Blood Bank for a 13 week travel assignment in Anchorage, Alaska. Required Qualifications:- One year of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician specializing in blood bank/immunohematology
- Valid license when needed in compliance with any state regulations
- National certification through ASCP or equivalent such as AMT, AAB, HEW certifications
- Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC)
- Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) certification
- Other certifications or licenses may be required for this position
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) specializing in the Blood Bank performs essential blood bank testing to ensure safe and effective blood transfusions. Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT/MLS), the MLT assists with routine immunohematology testing, blood typing, cross matching, and antibody screening. They play a vital role in transfusion services by supporting laboratory workflows and maintaining quality standards.
EssentialWork Functions:
- Perform routine blood bank testing, including blood typing, antibody screening, and cross matching procedures
- Prepare and issue blood components such as red blood cells, platelets, and plasma
- Maintain and monitor blood product inventory
- Conduct basic quality control testing on reagents, equipment, and laboratory processes
- Assist in the identification of minor antibodies within scope
- Follow standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines (AABB, CAP, FDA, CLIA)
- Document and report test results accurately in the laboratory information system (LIS)
- Ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, and storage for all blood samples
- Assist with troubleshooting minor instrument malfunctions
- Support the investigation of transfusion reactions by collecting and preparing necessary samples
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and quality assurance procedures within the blood bank laboratory
- Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills
- The ability to read, write, & communicate in the English language is required
- Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills
- Physical Abilities - Remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50-100lbs), pushing, pulling, bending
- Interpersonal Skills - To work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism
- Technical/Motor Skills - Ability to grasp, fine manipulation, pushing/pulling and able to move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
- Mental Requirements - Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public, customers, and meeting deadlines under pressure. Must be able to work under close supervision occasionally as well as working without assistance from other personnel. Must be able to contend with irregular activity schedules occasionally and continuous concentration to detail
- Sensory - Visual acuity, ability to effectively communicate.
