Summary

Under general direction assesses, treats and evaluates patients who require occupational therapy services in collaboration with physicians, other healthcare providers, and patient/family. Increases a patient’s quality of life through participation in ADL and IADL through therapeutic activities, exercise, ADL training, neuromuscular re‑education, manual therapy, cognitive training, orthotic fabrication, sensory integration and additional customized treatment programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provides evaluation, assessment, and treatment of occupational therapy patients in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Documents evaluation outcomes, findings and treatments.
  • Maintains statistical information of referrals and treatments.
  • Orders, evaluates and provides durable medical equipment/devices based on needs of patient.
  • Contributes to patient discharge planning with multidisciplinary team.
  • Participates in care conferences, rounds and various committees.
  • Educates staff on occupational therapy issues.
  • Resides, works and performs outreach in organization and professional events.
  • Supervises, trains and delegates activities of staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Develops staff skills and training plans.
  • Provides patient, family and community education.
  • Acts as clinical instructor for students of occupational therapy; provides education opportunities for volunteers; promotes the field of occupational therapy.
  • Collaborates with other hospital departments and outside community resources to increase patient success in day‑to‑day functioning.
  • Adheres to the regulatory and practice standards of occupational therapy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of the regulations and practice standards of occupational therapy.
  • Knowledge of direct patient care for occupational therapy patients.
  • Knowledge of equipment and instruments used in daily activities.
  • Skill in assessing, treating and evaluating occupational therapy patients.
  • Skill in using applicable equipment and instruments.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Skill in critical thinking in the performance of occupational therapy.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
Minimum Education Qualification

A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college program.

Minimum Experience Qualification

Non‑supervisory – None.

Minimum Certification Qualification
  • Must possess a current State of Alaska Occupational Therapy License OR a current Occupational Therapy License in another state and must obtain an Alaska Occupational Therapy License within 6 months of hire.
  • Must possess current Basic Life Support certification.
Additional Requirements

Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
