Summary

Under close supervision, this role provides technical surgical assistance, maintains a safe environment for patients and staff, and anticipates surgeon needs to ensure supplies and instruments are readily available during procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Review the surgeon preference card and procure supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Maintain the sterile field and practice appropriate scrub technique.
  • Verify all instrumentation and equipment are functioning before procedures.
  • Assist with draping the patient and perform surgical counts for sponges, needles, sharps, and instruments.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs with full attention to the procedure and respond appropriately.
  • Place and handle sharps safely to prevent injury.
  • Keep instruments on the sterile field, rinsed in sterile water, and remove bioburden as close as possible to use.
  • Assess fire‑safety risks during procedures.
  • Wash the patient’s skin around the incision and aid with dressing application.
  • Dispose of soiled drapes and sharps in a safe manner.
  • Remove water from the instrument‑soaking basin and transfer contaminated instruments to the sterile processing department.
  • Monitor patients for potentially dangerous physical changes and notify nursing or physician immediately.
  • Participate in unit problem‑solving activities and other projects as required.
  • Conduct orientation for new personnel and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture and politics.
  • Managing multiple priorities and deadlines concurrently.
  • Operating a personal computer with common applications.
Minimum Education Qualification

High school diploma or GED equivalent and completion of an accredited surgical technology program. Two years of operating room experience may substitute for education.

Minimum Experience Qualification

None for Surgical Technologist I; two (2) years of operating room experience for Surgical Technologist II.

Minimum Certification Qualification

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card.
