Position: Correctional Officer 2 FEMALE ONLY RECRUITMENT (Eagle River, AK)

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for multiple Female Correctional Officer 2 positions for the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) located in Eagle River, Alaska. Due to the needs of the Institution this Recruitment is for Female Applicants Only.

What you will be doing

Embark on a career in Corrections with numerous training and promotion paths. As a correctional officer, you will play a vital role in reforming those in custody and helping them positively contribute to society. You will perform 84‑hour work weeks with a week on/week off schedule that alternates day and night shifts.

New Correctional Officer 2s undergo 12‑14 months of structured field training and attend a seven‑week Correctional Officer Academy. After completing training, you will receive certification as a Correctional Officer from the Alaska Police Standards Council.

The working environment you can expect

Hiland Mountain Correctional Center is Alaska's designated facility for female prisoners. Located in Eagle River, it covers approximately 120,000 square feet across 11 buildings on 62.7 acres and holds a capacity for around 400 prisoners.

Who we are looking for

Core competencies

  • Follow oral and written instructions, use business software, and communicate information effectively.
  • Apply self‑defense, firearms, and appropriate force techniques in emergencies, resolving conflicts with sound judgment.
  • Read and comprehend statutes, regulations, and procedures; explain them to the public, inmates, and coworkers.

Desired competencies

  • Maintain order and discipline; operate the security control room and conduct routine security checks.
  • Create and maintain a rehabilitation‑conducive atmosphere for prisoners.
Required qualifications and experience
  • Completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy or equivalent accredited program.
  • One year of experience supporting custody, security, or rehabilitation in an adult correctional institution. Equivalent experience as a Correctional Officer 1 with the State of Alaska or elsewhere meets this requirement.
  • Be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen or National, and possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license issued in the United States. Commercial driver’s license endorsement may be required for some positions.
  • Must be willing to work shift assignments, including on‑call availability.
Background and Health Requirements

Appointment is conditional upon successful completion of a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and medical examination, including the use or possession of a firearm.

Applicants must submit a notarized F‑3 Personal History Statement Form and the Background Packet. Supporting documents include:

  • Certified high school/GED transcripts
  • Copy of birth certificate or valid passport
  • Foreign equivalency evaluations, if applicable
  • Naturalization certificates, if applicable
  • Military discharge forms, if applicable
  • Other relevant evaluations
Legal Employment & Security Clearance

Applicants must possess legal right to work in the U.S. and will be required to obtain a security clearance through the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). Candidates with felony or certain misdemeanors may be denied clearance.
