Emergency Management Specialist

Overview

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM), Public Assistance Branch is recruiting for an Emergency Management Specialist (EMS) 2. This position is in the General Government (GGU) bargaining unit at a range 16. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our Definition FAQ to determine if you qualify.

Our newest Emergency Management Specialist 2 (EMS) will play a key role in coordinating and implementing grant-funded disaster recovery programs across the state, participating in and leading disaster response and recovery operations, supporting the State Emergency Operations Center, and managing emergency communications and assistance requests. During emergencies, they may be deployed to local communities to coordinate state responses and assist in disaster planning and preparedness efforts, ensuring effective management and recovery efforts statewide.

DHS&EM is located on Joint Base Elmendorf/Fort Richardson (JBER) surrounded by the Arctic Valley with access to a three-mile walking/jogging trail, on-site cafe, and a no-cost fitness center at the Army National Guard Armory. You will collaborate with uniformed military members and fellow state employees to accomplish our mission while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

The successful applicants must pass a federal background check to qualify for military base access, which is required with this position s work location on base. The background check may include fingerprinting. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a DBIDS card. You must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment.

If using a private vehicle, a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of vehicle insurance, and a valid State of Alaska vehicle registration are required.

Special Note
:
In some cases employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC). As part of the examination process, a background check including a criminal records check will be conducted. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment; the circumstances will be considered.

One year of entry professional level experience mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, or recovering from emergencies, disasters, or terrorist events. The required experience is met by service as an Emergency Management Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. OR Two years of entry professional level experience creating contingency plans, conducting exercises, responding to events creating civil disruption or environmental disturbance, or coordinating recovery from such events.

OR A bachelor s degree from an accredited college, AND one year of entry professional level experience in the above.
