Anchorage Police Department (APD)

Location of Work3760 W. Dimond Blvd, Anchorage, Alaska
Responsibilities- Maintain order and enforce municipal, state, and federal laws.
- Respond to complaints, requests for assistance, and various emergency situations.
- Conduct preliminary investigations, collect and preserve evidence.
- Coordinate with other agencies, maintain records and daily reports.
- Prepare cases for court testimony and testify as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Use firearms, drive emergency vehicles, handcuff prisoners, administer first aid, perform rescue operations.
- Lift and carry 0‑70 lbs, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, stand for long periods, and perform lateral mobility tasks.
- Operate night, and peripheral vision and maintain balance, finger dexterity, and English speaking ability.
- Conduct physically demanding tasks such as running 400 yards with weighted vest as in the Job Task Simulation Test (JTST).
- U.S. citizen or U.S. National by date of hire (06/05/2026).
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum age 21 years by date of hire.
- Valid State of Alaska driver’s license by date of hire.
- Criminal background: no felony convictions after age 18; no marijuana use within the past one year.
- Successful completion of APSC certification within 13 months of hire (AS 18.65.240).
- Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
- Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
- APSC certification within 13 months of hire.
- APSIN/NCIC certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
- CJIS background check at hiring.
Applicants who meet minimum qualifications and municipal standards will be invited to participate in the Police Officer testing process. Written test passed at 70% minimum to advance to the Job Task Simulation Test (JTST). Unsuccessful applicants cannot re‑apply for six (6) months.
Job Task Simulation Test (JTST)Physically demanding; must complete 400‑yard run with obstacles and weighted vest within 3 minutes 36 seconds. Two attempts per testing day; further attempts on next available date.
Conditional Employment Process – Six Steps:
Structured behavioral interview assessing background, driving history, and substance use.

In‑depth employment history, criminal, civil, military, driving, and credit checks; interviews with spouses, employers, neighbors, and references.

Written exam (4–6 hours) and interview with licensed psychologist.

Panel of at least three command officers reviews file before Chief’s selection.

Final offer contingent upon completion of remaining conditions.
- Medical examination by a licensed physician to confirm physical fitness.
- Passing drug screen.
- Current Alaska driver’s license and motor vehicle driving record within 30 days of hire.
- 4% for an Associate’s Degree.
- 8% for a Bachelor’s Degree.
Veterans and National Guard members must attach DD Form 214 or equivalent with honorable discharge. Preference granted only if minimum qualifications met.
