Job Description
Kuna is looking for an Environmental Professional to work on our permitting and NEPA projects.
At Kuna, we design and permit a large variety of development projects in rural Alaska, from industrial mines to community wastewater plants to new community buildings. You will support these projects while coordinating with agencies to ensure their continued regulatory compliance.
In the environmental department, you will be involved in a variety of projects that may include Waters of the U.S. (WOUS) delineations and permitting, endangered species assessments, NEPA Environmental Assessment, siting and planning studies, stream assessments, water sampling, and complex planning and permitting. You will both lead and implement fieldwork in rural Alaska, including riding in small aircraft, and hiking across wilderness terrain.
This person may also assist with additional studies, including:
- Supporting preparation of environmental permit applications with various federal, state, and local agencies for a variety of project types/sizes.
- Supporting the preparation of environmental compliance documents in accordance with permitting and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) studies.
- Assisting with various environmental surveys and reporting.
- Technical planning and execution of projects, including document authoring and completion.
- Leadership of field sampling and data collection projects
- Effective client interaction with emphasis on permitting and environmental programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, private industry and government officials, and support staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including writing documents and data analysis.
- Capability to research and explain regulations, policies, or procedures.
- Degree in environmental sciences, engineering, chemistry, natural resource management, or related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
- Previous experience conducting fieldwork in rural Alaska
- Ability to adapt to and maintain a safety conscious work environment.
- Ability to demonstrate, conduct, and conform to a set of values and accepted standards, such as honesty, integrity, reliability, and accountability.
- Ability to pay attention to the details of a project or task and perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- High degree of organizational skills and ability to follow systematic methods for performing each task.

- Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and concisely with others using both the spoken and written word, as well as the ability to actively listen and comprehend communication from others.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office.
Description of environment:
Office building with standard office environment. Will also be on project sites both inside and outside.
Physical requirements:
Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
Travel:
May travel at least 50 percent of the time during field season and be away on field trips for multiple days. Employee may travel to remote areas and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes, helicopters and ATVs.
Travel may require an employee or contractor to pass a TSA security checkpoint. If the employee or contractor does not have valid identification, they will not be able to travel until valid identification is obtained and verified.
